Week 4

I'm back at it again with the barely recycling... The way my family recycles is by putting boxes by the garbage so we can remember to take them out. But when it comes to the little recyclable stuff, it all just goes in the garbage. Over break recycling in my house didn't happen as often as it should've. Having people over my house for holidays, and they're not being a bin in my house for people to put their waste in allows them room to put stuff in our garbage. For me having more knowledge on why recycling is important made my want to change my bad habit and I would encourage others to do same and save the earth. Read articles and see how you (we) can contribute to making the earth more sustainable so we can live in it. Continuing this impactful behavior would be the best option but it has been a difficult task for the past month but I'm not sure if it will be something that I will remember to do every day given that there is no recycling bin in my house. To conc...

Week 3 mid-point reflection

This is now my 3rd week of attempting to recycle regularly .... I am failing at the this majorly. There's a huge difference between wanting to complete something and actually completing it, it's something called procrastination. Just constantly forgetting or saying oh too late now I'll have to remember to do it tomorrow. But the idea of creating a new habit to reduce my environmental impact has not yet stuck with me. I was consistent for a week tops. After reading the article it explains to me why I have been had for me to grasp onto my personal impact habit I claimed I was going to do. And even the forgetting that this is a project that I was going to do. This article makes me want to continue on with the project just to prove that I can do it consistently within 21 days. "On average, it takes more than 2 months before a new behavior becomes automatic — 66 days to be exact. And how long it takes a new habit to form can vary widely depending on the behavi...

For the second week of recycling, I have been able to get my family on board with gaining the new habit of recycling. We have now gotten a bin where we can put of plastic water bottles and boxes from online shopping. On average, we recycled and composted  1.51 pounds  of our individual waste generation of  4.40 pounds  per person per day (1) "If everyone in America recycled just one plastic bottle, those materials could make more than 54 million T-shirts or about 6.5 million fleece jackets, according to Repreve data." (2) "If everyone recycled one plastic bag, those materials could be reused in making 28,906 park benches or, according to Tex data,144,530 16-foot composite deck boards" (2) "Recycling often saves energy and natural resources through conservation. ... By using materials more than once, we conserve natural resources. In the case of paper, recycling saves trees and water. Making a ton of paper from recycled stock saves up to 17 trees and u...
How was your first week of recycling? You ever think about maybe I should actually do the thing i said i was going to do and the end up not accomplishing it? Yeah me too. But that doesn't mean I don't have a plan... The goal is that my household will get in the norm of recycling correctly.  “The U.S. is the king of trash, producing a world-leading 250 million tons a year—roughly 4.4 pounds of trash per person per day.” (1) With this in mind i will help reduce waste by recycling, composting and trashing. Recycling correctly can produce GHG emissions and when it goes into an incinerator it will release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. And it will help save 3.3 cubic yards of landfill space. (2) " reduce the harmful impact of human activities on the environment and reduce consumption of natural resources." (3) Also by recycling and composting everyday it's reducing food from decomposing in landfills. (4) References: https://news.nationalgeographic.com/20...
